What size clipper blades?

What size clipper blades(oster clippers) should I use on dogs back, belly, legs and face.I ha a long haired chihuahua and alos a mute that has long thick hair. Thanks fo r the help.

What size clipper blades?

It depends on how short you want the hair- the blades are numbered so that the smaller the number, the longer the hair. When a vet shaves for surgery, they use a #40 blade, this one I wouldn't recommend for anything, as there's a good chance of razor burn. A #30 blade is also pretty close- and if you've ever seen show poodles- this is the blade used on the face. A #10 blade is pretty close, but has less of a chance of razor burn unless the dog has really sensitive skin.- If you don't want the hair skin close, you might start with a #4, and if that isn't close enough, go to a #7.

Hope that helps.

get the trimmers with a variety of blade lengths and experiment. on my spaniel, we end up using multiple blades on different parts of her face and body to sculpt the fur. most likely, one size attachment won't work over the entire body. it's kinda trial and error.

10 is for shaving the belly area and the anus.

I use a 3 on my Bichon Frise. 4 is recommended for long-haired breeds such as Maltese.

The lower the number, the more hair you'll leave. There are also blades for a curly coat (uneven, staggered blade) or for a straigh coat. I also use Oster.

You should usually use the smallest or the next to smallest guard. Do not try shaving them without the guard or you can irritated their skin. If you are just shaving them down, but not trying to shave them to any breed standard, it shouldn't matter if you do it all one length.

Make sure your clippers are designed for the whole body, and that they aren't just trimmers.. (Designed for the face, feet, ears, etc.)

Also, make sure you take breaks as the blades get hot. Use a good spray-lube and oil on the blades before and during clipping.

If by 'mute' you mean 'Malamute', PLEASE do not clip it down!! It will ruin his hair forever, and it causes them to overheat in the summer and freeze in the winter. You never, ever clip a sled dog.

As for the Chi, #7 and #10 are standard shave-down blades, 10 being slightly shorter. For a longer clip, you can try a #5. Typically a dog is shaved with the same blade all over. I can't imagine why you'd need to shave a Chi's face, there's nothing on it. If you want the whiskers off, use the 10. 10 is considered safer when working around the belly and groin area. I would strongly urge you to use a professional groomer or at least have them show you a few things, I have seen HORRENDOUS injuries owners have done trying to clip their own dogs, it's not as safe or easy as professionals can make it look!
