I have a rough collie; He is about 10 years old and has a lot of fur in every nook and cranny. I am constantly cutting and trimming his hair. He has a lot of hot spots and sore areas on his skin. With the summer coming on, I keep thinking he would be more comfortable without all that fur. Is it normal to just take a set of clippers and cut it all off? Not bald, but short hair. I keep thinking it would be easier to locate and treat his sores that way. Plus the heat wouldn't be so bad on him for the summer. What do you think of this? Thanks for your responses...

I suggest calling your vet and getting his opinion. I have a white German Sheperd and I get him clipped every May. make sure you do it early enough that it will be all grown back by fall though. Also. have a dog groomer do it. Its not that expensive and they already have all the needed equipment as well as the knowledge.

as long as the hair is a little long to shade his skin, I truly believe the dog should be inside and out of the sun if he has son spots, then you can shave him completely until his wounds heal and they would be easier and less messy to clean. Bath the dog once a week at least to keep the freshly cut hair clean, and well groomed.

As a groomer I can so no it will not hurt your collie. But also I must say that a dogs fur is used not only to keep it warm, but also to keep it cool, and to prevent the skin from being burned. I would recommend you take him to a professional groomer. But if you are going to do it yourself wet the hair first and make sure you leave at least an inch of fur.

As far as your dog is concerned, I think it would be best to take him to a pet groomer. Clipping a pet isn't that easy to do and their the risk that you might accidentally cut him. Plus, you have the issue of the sores. Those skin problems need to be properly treated and that advise will need to come form a vet. I think you're going to have to bite the bullet and spend a little money on your dog. Don't let suffer with the sores and unkempt fur any longer. Take him to the dog groomer where they can safely clip him and maybe they'll even have some good advise about the sores.

That is the best thing you could do for your boy. Be sure to keep him a warm, padded area to sleep. He won't mind the hair 'do' at all. It is more humane than to try to keep him brushed, and not be able to tend his sores.

I found that the dog didn't really care for it all that much. I, on the other hand found it quite enjoyable as I didn't get any hair in my mouth when me and Fluffy (who, coicidentaly is no longer fluffy) had play time. NO, it won't hurt your collie. I had a beautiful tri colored rough and I had him shaved every spring. The hair grows back quickly, it kept him cool in the hot southern summer, and it keeps the fur from matting and tangling as you can brush him daily as he grows out. The only thing you have to be careful with is letting him in the sun too much right after shaving. You need to keep inside or in the shade until enough fur grows back to keep him from getting sunburned. I think about 2 answerer's hear are relevant the others well....they can go to the dogs. I would be taking him to a Grooming salon and have a professional do the job. If you tell them the reasons that you want to get him clipped eg. the treating of the sores, and the weather at the time they will be able to do an length that suites the both of you. nothing wrong with that...just not bald if he was bald he could get sunburn. medicating the hot spots will be easier and not as messy
