Any tips on shaving a kitty with a fluffy, long, impossible coat?

I just bought Oster A5 double speed clippers to give my poor kitty a hair cut. They aren't clipping through the fur the way the groomers do. These are supposed to be great clippers for the job. I am using a size 10 blade. Any advice would be super!

I'd take the clippers and the cat to the groomer and get a lesson on how to use the equipment from them.

To answer some of the other posters, some cats don't mind being brushed but some are really really sensitive and can't stand to be brushed in the areas where they get mats. For these cats, clipping is the only alternative and many cats seem to enjoy it. I used to have a cat who got a lion cut every couple months and her attitude was MUCH improved after a clipping.

Perhaps take the cat to a groomer and bring the clippers with you to ask them to show you how to use them.

DO NOT EVER CLIP YOUR CAT! You should 'brush it' out at least twice a day if it has a 'fluffy, long coat' but you should take it ONLY TO A PROFESSIONAL GROOMER for any 'clipping' or 'cutting' of it's fur ... and if the groomer simply 'won't do it' it's because you have a LONG HAIRED CAT ... and if you can't 'deal with it' then you must 'find it a good home' where they can 'deal with it' and get yourself a 'normal short-haired cat.'

Use the vet!

i have long hair cats. they love when its time for the groomer. well they dont like the groomer but they like the results after. they get their fur cut in the summer and they love the results. and so do i. less shedding on my furniture and less hairballs for the cats.

Take your kitty to a groomer.... Brushing daily helps alot. If you can't handle his long coat then give him to someone who can.

I have a Maine Coon that has a very thick undercoat. It is impossible to care for and I take him to the groomer and get his buzzed. As to why your clippers are not working, I can't say. The previous persons suggestion to take the cat and the clippers to a groomer is a good one. I know that the clippers that the groomers use are very expensive and have variable speed motors, so you might not have a powerful enough clipper. By the way, my cat loves it when his coat is clipped short. He is much more comfortable and can keep himself cleaner when he is buzzed. Don't listen to those people that say you are not taking care of your cat correctly.

We always had to cut out the knots with scissors first, then the vet could shave the rest, so if knots are part of your problem I would spend some time snipping first. I think the suggestion to get a professional to show you with your own clippers is a good one.

I have a cat who needs to be shaved about twice a year. Her fur just gets so matted - no problems with my other long hair cats, just her. You should use a scissors and carefully cut some of the thick mats out first, then shave. If I don't do that first, my clippers won't go through her hair either.
