Is my cat spayed?

I just rescued a kitty and the previous owners offered no information to the facility where I got her other than her estimated age (1.5 years). They do not sterilize the animals there, nor do they do any tests. I want to know if I can tell if she was previously spayed. I would hate to see her be cut open for no reason, and honestly I do not want to have to pay for something that is not necessary. I imagine I could look for a scar, but her hair is pretty thick and she is freaking out if I bring the clippers near her to shave her belly for a better look. She is going to the vet tomorrow to have blood work and vaccinations, if I cannot tell will the vet be able to?

I am really not being cheap, if she is not spayed I will have it done. I just do not want to have her put under and cut if there is no need.

The first thing I would suggest is bringing the cat to the vet to find out all the information needed and get the kitty her shots. But you already have the appointment and you are awesome for it and very responsible!!!

Yes the vet will be able to tell you if she had been spayed or not. They should be very experienced in this department. They should not do surgeries that are not necessary! Most are very experienced and will not do surgeries that are unnecessary.

The vet could probably do a quick Xray and figure than one out. There might be a little expense to that.

vets will be able to tell. Check its ears, is the tip of one flat? If it's been cut, its been spayed. Or check the inside for the ear for a tattoo. It looks like a 0 with a line in the middle.

I will join in with "the vet should be able to tell" - you need to have her examined anyways. But if you were not going there tomorrow, I would check if she goes into heat - that would definitely mean she needs to be spayed.

Anyway, the vet is not likely to have her spayed on the same visit as the vaccinations - at least mine asked me to wait a few days at least to see the vaccination did not take side effects, before I should schedule the neutering of my kitty... so asking him to check, if possible, will not delay the spaying any further, if it should be done.
