No.1 leaves the shortest hair, 2 is slightly longer, and 3 is longer still. Using no attachment will get the closest to the skin (obviously).

Your hair should not be thining at 20, you should contact a doctor, there might be something more to this.

Try a rogaine like product. That might help, if not, eh, embrace it and go bald.
Try Rogaine. Please don't shave your head, unless you are in the military or a cancer patient, then that looks so bad.

Is there any rel way to get of razor bumps and blackheads from underneath the neack especially. i use clippers instead of a razor, the razor and the cream seem to cut to close and when the hair comes back it hurts some and bumps up quikly i had to grow a beard for a while to make sure thy were gone. they have amny products but do any truly work i exfoliate using clean and clear currently(after I shave). ANy help???
walgreens sells bump cream,it's with the shave cream.
Use a oatmeal exfoliating scrub and follow up with a product called "Bump Away" You can usually find it in most "black barber shops"
My ex is black and he had the same problem forever, especially on the neck. He says to use black soap that can be found at any beauty supply store that sells hair. Hope this helps and good luck!!

I cut my dogs hair all the time with "human" hair clippers, they basically are the same thing as "dog" clippers. Depending on how short you want his hair which guard you use, the first time probably wont turn out like you thought but don't give up you will get better at it.

You shouldn't shave a pug. By doing in, you may have damaged to coat so bad that it will no longer grow back.

Why are you doing this? Is it because of shedding? Pugs have very short hair and need it for protection from the sun and winter cold. They should not be shaved. You can rub it down outside to get the loose hairs out, vacuum more often.
But let his hair grow back in. Hopefully it will become like new but it may take 6 months to a year.
Why do you shave your pug? Their hair protects them from both heat and cold. If it is to prevent shedding I find a good rub down with a rubber glove every day does the trick. Pugs can be prone to skin and coat problems but other more serious things can cause hair to not grow back.
Why are you shaving a pug's hair? Pug's are a breed that do not get shaved unless they have some sort of fungus that needs topical treatment and the Vet says it needs shaving.
So I would strongly advise if you just do this because you think it looks cute or something, to stop. Also, if you are not an experienced groomer or real familiar with dog clippers, you can burn your dogs skin. Maybe that is why the hair is not growing back everywhere?
They don't have much hair to start with. Why would yoiu want a bald pug? That is cruel. I certainly hope you are not serious.
It may never grow back in right. I'd shave him if it was medically necessary, but that's it. I have never had a pug, but have had other dogs that needed to be shaved for surgeries, and on some the hair grew back--on others, they always had thinner sparse hair. One even grew back with a cowlick thing.

Shaving your pug? Pugs have a very thin layer of hair to start with. Why would you want him to be bald? The only time you should shave a pug is when it is directed by a vet for medical reasons.

DO NOT SHAVE DOUBLE-COATED BREEDS!!!! it destroys the coat (as you have now found out). it will never go back to the way it was before. it may improve, but you can not undo all the damage. the only dogs that should ever be shaved are single coated breeds like shih tzus, yorkies, poodles, etc.
there is really no point to shaving a double-coated dog. it doesn't make them shed less (the hair is just smaller) and the coat grows back in even thicker than before. the hair, even in really fluffy dogs like huskies and samoyeds, acts as insulation from both the heat and the cold.
it takes a long time for a pugs hair to grow back so dont be worried and if it doesnt grow bak.....knit him/her a wooly jumper! lol

one is the shortest and 5 is the longest, they vary by 1/4 inches, and you can move the blades on your clippers up and down for added variations another 1/4 inch.
Works by eighth's of inches. ie no1 = 1/8inch (about 3mm) no2 = 1/4inch (about 6mm), no.3 = 3/8inch, no.4=1/2inch, no5=5/8inch. Some clippers go all the way up to a no.8 which is an inch long. Hope that helps.

I hate cutting hair, but if I'm cutting a man's I'd rather use clippers. If you want it REALLY short, go with a 1 or 2 guard.
they don't really help with shedding, but yes u can use them on cats! they have this grooming brush that removes the undercoat, that is what you should look for!

not really. vets do this when the cats are sedated but the noise and sensation would scare them. is this for a legitamate reason like there is something stuck in the fur or are you just messing with you cat?
if something is stuck cut it out carefully with blunted scissors (childrens ones). if you're trying to give it a haircut by a barbie doll and play with that and leave the poor cat alone.
I cut my cat's hair all the time with clippers. It depends on the cat. If the cat is freaking out, then you probably shouldn't. But my cat likes the attention and seems to enjoy it.

All cutting and clipping on a cat is dicey. Cats have very thin skin, much moreso than human skin. If you are inexperienced you can nick the skin, leading to bleeding, infection, etc.
It's best to leave this to an experienced vet tech or groomer if it is needed.
Lots of things are sold in pet stores, like flea and wormer meds that are not good for cats. Just because they have it doesn't mean it's a good idea.
It can be safe or not depending on the person handling the clipppers. You also might like to get some tips from a hairdresser or a vet. they can help.

Dry.....If wet it will clog the clippers, and also mat down. When doing it have a DRY wash cloth or hand towel handy. That way you can use it to wipe away the hair on the head and you can see the spots that you missed. Also to blend the hair cut as far up as you want and then use a smaller pair of clippers(for side burns), and run it up and down along the hair line. Make sure that when you do this that you don't follow the curve of the head, but keep it straight it will make less of a line and more blended.

I have a 6 year old male Shih Tzu. Everytime he goes to the groomer he gets scared and he growls and snaps. I had a groomer before that could deal with him, but I have since moved out of state. I have tried every groomer in the area where I live now, they either wont groom him at all or they call me in mid groom and say "Come get him, I cant work with this dog." Or they charge me about 100$ over the normal price because they said he acted bad and took up to much of their time. So I have been forced to face the fact I am going to have to do this myself. I bought a dog grooming kit with shears, brushes and clippers. But I am confused about something, do I shave the dog before the bath? Or do I give him a bath, dry him then shave him? Or should I bathe him then shave while his hair is still wet? And please dont tell me this breed does not need to be shaved, I know that, but he just isnt happy when his hair is long. Any info and tips will help alot, thanks!
Wow, it's like practically nobody read your question and just flung out all sort of opinions about mats and stuff you didn't even mention. Wierd. Also, about 95 % of pet Shih Tzus ARE clipped down into various length "Puppy Cuts".
Generally, clip the coat, wash the dog, dry the dog, reclip the coat. You may find that the dog bites you at the same point he bites the groomers, in which case you would have to resort to the vet grooming.
Places to watch your fingers and face are doing his feet and working around his face. Some males get nasty about having their privates shaved. If he is not neutered, I recommend you get him done. No sense to ever breed a Shih Tzu with a bad attitude, generally Shih Tzus are nice and calm, never mean.
If your grooming set can not handle his fur, go to a pet super store and buy an Andis clipper and get one that includes a #10 blade. Then you could buy a #4 blade on the side and you could clip him with that blade in the winter, the 10 in the summer.
I'm a groomer of 10 years. Take him to a Vet that offers grooming. Have him stripped down nose to tail every 3 months and let them tranquilize him at first.It will either get better (where the dog is again OK with being handled by a groomer) or worse ( they will need to completely Anastasie the dog)I assume that either you didn't take him for regular grooming from puppy hood (every 4 to 8 weeks) or he had a bad experience at the groomer.
You shave to remove the excess hair, then you bath and dry, then you shave again to tidy it up because the hair goes differenly after it's been bathed and dried. Then you scissor to clean up the "flyaways".
It's best to have someone show you, because a novice with sharp objects and a jumpy dog can lead to disaster. Perhaps you could pay a groomer to show you how?
Or perhaps it would be best to simply have him shaved at the vet's under sedation/anesthetic. Expensive, yes, but probably safer all around.
It really depends on how much time you have and how dirty he gets. If he has lots of mats or a very oily coat, you may find the DIY clippers will not perform very well.
Another thing to consider is the condition of his coat. If his coat is very thick, the shampoo might not get to his skin or roots. In that case, I would clip/shave, then shampoo.
Whatever you do, do not shave him while he is wet! You can shave him before the bath, bathe him, and then after he dry, go over him again if he looks uneven. It sounds like he might be afraid of the clippers. Try to contact a local dog obedience instructor/trainer for help. he/you may just need a few lessons to help him get used to you doing the grooming. Brush the long hair before a bath and untangle them so that you wont have a hard time blowdrying them after a bath and use warm water. About the shaving part, Shih tzu's are long haired dogs and doesn't need to be shaved although you might want to cut the hair that comes in contact with their eyes. I think it's the ones in the eyes that's bothering your dog. You only shave if they have mange, it's a kind of parasite that lives under the skin or dirty dogs. In that case you have to shave all of it.
Why shave him?
Just keep him clipped to a reasonable length.

Shih Tzu's often are bad about grooming because most people get them and then never work with them until they are a solid mat and then expect them to like being groomed every few months. I think some of the suggestions were fine -- maybe take him to the vet and have him sedated a bit and then shaved down and THEN as he is growing out, put him on your grooming table daily and brush him... keep him from matting in the first place. Mats hurt because the hair is pulled and it makes the skin sore so grooming, even just clipping can be uncomfortable so if someone was hurting you, you would be bad about it too. People get coated dogs and cats and then never brush them. Do not ever bathe him before you brush him out as that will tighten mats up. Get him used to you brushing him -- he can learn that it is a nice thing. I always had my coated breeds so relaxed with grooming that they would lay over on their side for me to brush them -- you brush your hair daily to prevent mats, why would you expect your dog's hair not to tangle when left unbrushed for weeks on end? Get some treats and put him on the table for a few minutes of brushing at first -- don't expect him to stay there for thirty minutes and allow an overall brushing the first time -- build up so that he knows it isn't an unpleasant thing ... make it pleasant for him so that he looks forward to your time together. There are spray conditioners that help keep the electric hair thing from happening for him and help you to brush him out easier if he is a little tangled. Just like you, it hurts to have tangles removed without care. Don't bother with shears until you are more comfortable with dealing with him or with the clippers as either of these you can mess up with and hurt him which is counter productive -- you want to make him look forward to and enjoy his time on the table being brushed and then maybe you can get someone to help teach you better about clipping him up. There is no harm in shaving your shihtzu. Many many owners opt for this as there is less work involved in keeping up with them. You can pre-clip before the bath. Don't worry about trying to brush him out before a bath either. The hair is coming off. If he were a full coated to the floor dog yes prebrush. But he isn't.
Yes many people don't understand this but it is possible. The clippers you bought ( usually called pet clippers at walmart and petsmart those kinds of places) just aren't made to work that well. The blade only comes in one size and doesn't come off and you have to rely on the blade combs. Not worth the money. A professional clipper and blades are a much better choice but they will set you back quite a few dollars. But it is an investment to use over and over again.
If he is really matted at this point, it would be better to pay the vet groomer to have his sedate and shaved down the first time. Then you keep up with it at home. If he gets a smoothie at the vet the first time, you may be able to overcome his fears or aggressions at home with good consistent training. Often times what an owner thinks is fear is actually a dog just being "pissy" about being made to do something he doesn't want to do. The only way a dog has to tell you that is either fight or flee. Fleeing isn't an option at the groomers so fighting is the only way to go for him.
It is very difficult to groom a shihtzu who doens't want it done. Between the slightlys smooshie noses, the pokie outie eyes and the short legs they are just a tought cookie.
If you are patient but firm, don't back down, use common sense and take you time you can probably learn to groom your boy yourself.
There are some very good books, videos and online chat lists you can reference for help.
I just can't stress too strongly though how dangerous grooming and aggressive dog is. As a novice you are running the risk of hurting your dog or getting hurt if you aren't very very careful. However it can be done.
As a professional groomer I don't generally recommend owners try to groom their own pets ( otherwise I'd be out of work), but if the desire is strong enough, and the commitment is high enough I'll do everything I can to help them learn to do it safely.

Thats what happened to my son when he was 4 yrs old i cut his hair and his curls disappeared. he has straight hair now.
I am not sure but I did the same thing and my sons curls never returned either, I have a 11 month old and refuse to cut those curls!!
I DON'T KNOW BUT MY 5 YEAR OLD HAD SUPER CURLY HAIR AND I LOVED IT. i'm not taking any chances. my little one has a headful of long curly hair. the springy kind! tooooo cute! and it's so long! i just love her hair and i have no plans to cut it.
Would it matter if the hair is fair or dark? Because I was born with curly hair and mom cut it many times, I went through an afro phase too at 2 years old hehehe yet anyway it still is curly to this day. ( i have dark hair) Just a thought anyway.
I am at my inlaws house and they have to shih tzu dogs. The groomer is sick and in the hosptial and the dogs need grooming bad! I have the clippers, but need some instructions. Does anyone know where I can find a video or step by step instructions on the net that will tell me how to do this?
Can we say dog groomers. Some things are better left to the professionals. You might not want your dog looking like it was attacked by some clippers manufactured by Hezbollah.
Do you have the pet clippers? They are different than clippers for people. It is very simple. All you do is put the guard on there, depending on how much you want to cut, and chop away. If this is your first time, I don't know how even you will be, but I wish you the best of luck. IT takes a little practice, but I think you will be fine~!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Also, if you need pet clippers, you can get them for about 80.00, (the good kind) at any local pet store.
i am a groomer, i know they have video links at petgroomer.com. you must be very careful. if u dont know what you are doing it is not hard to slice a dogs skin with the clipper blade. i would try to find another groomer. Petco grooming is open 7 days a week.
You should leave this to a professional. Get the dogs an appt with another groomer then watch how it is done. After seeing it done a couple of times then you can try it.
Being that you are new at this, I would say stay away from the clippers.
You can possibly snip the dogs vital veins if you are not careful.
If he/she is natted real bad, try shaving off the natts a little at a time with an electric shaver.
edge the natt ,then comb away loose hair, then edge the natt again. Untill it is gone.
Other than that I would say wait for the groomer to get well.
If they are actual DOG hair clippers there should have been instructions with the clippers, if not be sure to use the LONGEST(usually 3/4 in) attachment that you have. Just go over them with that and it will thin their hair out just fine. I will warn you if you don't have actual DOG clippers the human ones will barely work on your dog's hair type. You may want to wait until your groomer is better if this is the case. Just give them both GOOD brushings or find a diffrent groomer just this once.

Well, i'd wait. I shave my Shih Tzu and trust me, it take lots of time and practice. The first few times I did his hair, it looked like he got into a fight with a lawn mower and lost. It wasn't until the 8th or 9th time I did it and it looked decent. Now, I'm a pro. Call another groomer into do it. Plus, if you don't have the right clippers, the hair will be harder to cut!

You obviously missed the 70s, when skinheads were about! Feather cuts were grown-out skinheads. Then in the 80s women liked the short hair with length on top, many of which were clippered at the back.Then in the 90s indie girls liked an undercut - i.e. leave it really long on top so it hides the shaved bits until you put it up...

I've been cutting hair for awhile, not licensed but just around my neighborhood etc. After buying many 20$ Wal-Mart brands and having them break after a month or so I decided to get some professional clippers.
I went ahead and got some Oster Powerline Professionals (OS-76076-040). Haven't recieved them yet but I was wondering if I should return these and get some Oster 76' Classics? They both cost around 120$. Are they basically going to be about the same so I can just stick with the Powerlines.
Also thinking about getting a T-Blade to hook up some designs.
Any Suggestions from people who have tried out the powerlines would be appreciated.
