Do salons have to sterilize between clients?

I went into a salon today and got a haircut. I got there at 9:15 am (they opened at 9), as the stylist was finishing up with the first client of the day, a female with shoulder length hair. When I sat down, I noticed that there was hair on the guards for the electric clipper, which was odd, since they wouldn't have been used on the first client, meaning that the hair had been there since at least the day before. When she was finished with my hair, I realized she had used the same scissors AND comb on my hair that she had used on the previous client. Looking around, I saw absolutely no means to sterilize the instruments between clients. I didn't say anything at the time, (I know, I should have, but it didn't sink in until later) But is it standard practice not to sterilize equipment? It was one of the chain salons, and I only paid $17 but is it too much to ask for them to use a clean comb and scissors?

Do salons have to sterilize between clients?

The specific laws vary state by state for stylists/salon rules/laws but BY ALL MEANS EVERY STATE HAS TO STERILIZE ALL COMBS/BRUSHES,ETC BETWEEN CLIENTS!!!!!! The hair in the clippers are a big no-no! all hair should be cleaned off first and then disinfected before those even touch another's skin-the scissors, by law, are considered a non-porous implement/tool since they're made from stainless steel so I wouldn't be too freaked about that but I always clean all hair clippings and wipe my scissors off between clients with alcohol at least which is considered a low-level disinfectant-all combs/brushes have to be sterilized with a hospital grade disinfectant-check out this web-site for your specific state:

Of course they have to and its mandatory that they do. If not the salon could face fines and possible termination of business.

Do salons have to sterilize between clients?

yes they have to sterilize between clients but usually small salons don't. It's not expensive and when a salon does sterilize shows respect to the clients.

Surely you can contact the head offices and state what your experience. If their policy is not to sterilize , change salon.
