WIll my son outgrow being so sensitive around the nape of his neck?

My son is a little more than 3.5 y/o. He received his 1st hair cut when he turned 3. The back of his hair/neck has always been very sensitive. He gets a close cut at the barber's. The back is always a struggle. He always squirms and wiggles and jumps and has even resorted to crying. The barber has let him feel the clippers with his hands so he would feel that it does not hurt (i think it is a 1 guard)...but he still squirms and cries. Even when you run your finger across the nape of his neck, he jumps and squirms. And it has been this way since he was 6 or 7 months old. Can I expect that he will outgrow this???

i would think that everyone is different. but i have a friend in the exact same sitiaution, even if you wiggle your fingers at her from from away (as if you're tickling her) she gets all squirmish! and believe it or not, she's 20 years old!! she hasn't had a hair cut in a while and i've never really seen her get one so i don't know what she's like, but i can just imagine her. she's always guarding her neck and will kill you even if you accidentally touch it (i speak from experience) i've asked her why she's like that and she's said she really doesn't know but her mother is like that too so i'm guessing that it's heredity (?). i'm sorry to say but her mother didn't outgrow it either, but everyone is different so maybe your son will. be patient and understanding and maybe fully outgrow it, but be able to have a haircut..

My husband is SO sensitive about his neck and always was. (he is 28 now!). I don't think they out grow it...but they become a little more tolerable. Of course my husband doesn't squirm when he gets a hair cut. :)

But, he hates it when I touch his neck. He also has to wear shirts that aren't too tight around the neck, and forget about turtle necks!
