I want to shave my Queensland for the summer? I cannot find a vet thats willing to do it.?

I have a red queensland healer his is a very hair boy! We live in a area that is really hot durring the summer time. Most of the summer we are in the high 90's to 107. So I feel bad for the dog because he has so much hair. Should I try shaving him myself? We have a set of pet clippers. The only thing my vet told us is to leave his little reverse mohawk! Any advice?

You don't shave Heelers. You keep them in the house with the AC where it is cool.

Take him to a groomer and have them do it. If you cant find a groomer to do it, then go ahead and do it yourself. It probably wont look as nice as if a groomer did it because he will most likely be squirmy but atleast you get that coat off of him.

Hi,

You should do it yourself. You should buy an Andis pet grooming razor thing. It is really easy. Go to www.andis.com

I wouldnt shave him at all. I have a Pekingese and his hair can get long too. Just have a groomer give him a semi-short 'puppy' like cut. He NEEDS his long hair .. that actually keeps him cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Just give him a trim and he'll be fine. Dont over exercise when its hott out .. walk him in the morning and evening (cooler times), make sure he has fresh cool water and give him ice cubes as some treats.

This dog is going to be in serious trouble if you shave him! A dog's coat protects them from the heat, cold and sun. If you were to shave him he'd lose his protection and you would most definitely have to either keep him out of the sun altogether or keep slathering him with sun screen to prevent severe sun burn.

Why not buy a good rake and thin out his undercoat with that, then leave the rest of his hair alone. Your vet knows what he's doing refusint to shave him!

any groomer will do it i would't advise doing it yourself. that would be a big pain. it only cost me about 35$ to have my dog shaved bathed and clipped. and he looks good. i don't even give my dogs baths it not worth the trouble when someone eles will do it cheap. got to keep the economy going:)

A dogs coat not only keeps them warm in the winter, it keeps them cool in the summer. Remember a dog does not sweat so they are unable to control their body temp that way. If the local Vets refuse to shave your dog maybe there is a reason (assuming they do offer grooming services.)

Let's see, do you want your head shaved for the summer? Probably not. Dogs need their fur for protection. These dogs are from australia where it's warm in the summer. Don't mess with the dog.
