My 13 yr old Downs son gets violent for haircuts. Any ideas to help?

He gets horribly violent with both scissors and clippers. We have tried everything and nothing works. He has not had a bad experience at all. While this is not a life/death situation, he needs to get his hair cut because he gets upset when his hair gets in his eyes. We just can't win. This has been going on since he started getting haircuts. No one has been able to help him or us so far. Please-any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

What does your son's behavioral therapist say about this? What methods do you use to calm him down when he is upset?

How would he feel about one of those flowbees? Don't tell him he's getting a haircut while using it, just tell him you are cleaning his hair or something along those lines. Use it on yourself or your husband first to show it is fun and safe (set the settings so high it doesn't actually cut your hair).

I'm sure you can get one on ebay for just a few bucks.

You need to put him in his place (ie be more strict).

Try

-when he's sleeping

-xanax

-therapy

-painting the scissors pink and covering them with feathers to disguise them.

Have you tried offering him clips or a hair band to keep the hair out of his eyes when it gets too long? The choice is his: haircut or girls stuff to keep the hair out of his eyes.

Or maybe just use gel. There's heaps of guys with long hair. Let him grow it.

Put him in front of the TV and let him watch his favorite show while you cut! Or let him have a shot at it with a doll with you watching very closely, of course. When you can finally cut, give him a nice butch so you don't have to cut for quite a while. Everyone will understand :)

My sister has Downs and she is also bad at the dentist and the haircut place. We have her watch other people(who are enjoying it) and point out how cool it is. We also have her hold somebody's hand and concentrate on a different object. Hope that helps!
